BEIJING, China (November 7, 2017) - On November 7, 2017, Perkins Coie LLP hosted a patent law seminar at the Oriental Bay International Hotel in Beijing. The seminar addressed current intellectual property (IP) legal issues facing Chinese companies and enterprises whose products are sold in the United States. Perkins Coie attorneys provided practical legal information based on their experiences in advising Chinese companies on complex legal issues when participating in the U.S. marketplace. Representatives from leading companies, law firms, industry associations and trade organizations attended the seminar.

Perkins Coie Patent Litigation partner James Coughlan, firmwide co-chair of the firm’s International Trade Commission Section 337 Actions practice, and Patent Litigation partner Kevin Patariu presented practical advice for Chinese companies that are accused of intellectual property infringement and described strategies to obtain valuable intellectual property in the United States. Patent Litigation partner Johnny Chiu spoke on protecting trade secrets and provided an update on U.S. criminal trade secret law.

“We appreciate the opportunity to share our IP knowledge and strategies for Chinese companies and enterprises with the seminar attendees,” said James. “We believe these important topics will help Chinese companies navigate key IP issues in the U.S.”

“While patent, trademark, and copyright infringement is always a risk for companies exporting products to the United States, obtaining U.S. intellectual property is an opportunity for Chinese companies and enterprises to become more valuable and improve their competitive position in the U.S. market,” said Kevin. “The seminar was a great opportunity to explain how patent analysis and landscaping can help Chinese companies to obtain more valuable patents in the United States.”

Perkins Coie’s IP practice group litigates patent infringement cases in U.S. district courts across the United States and before the U.S. International Trade Commission.
