Overview

As a global financial center and transportation hub and the largest city by population in the world, Shanghai has been described as the "showpiece" of the booming economy of mainland China. Perkins Coie opened its Shanghai office in 2006 to serve multinational clients conducting business in China as well as Chinese clients doing business in the United States. We have a strong, long-term commitment to China and offer clients an effective combination of U.S. legal acumen and insight into the ever-changing business and regulatory environment in China.

Working with our sister office in Beijing, our Shanghai office expands our existing China practice and allows us to advise clients on a full range of legal matters in the PRC, including:

  • Intellectual Property
  • International Trade, Regulatory & Governmental Affairs
  • Corporate Law & Cross-Border Transactions
  • Arbitration, Litigation & Investigations
  • E-Commerce, Data Privacy and Cybersecurity
  • Trust & Estate Planning

Clients dealing with intellectual property issues in the United States and China benefit from our significant patent procurement, international patent portfolio management, patent due diligence analysis and patent litigation experience. Since 2003, Perkins Coie has assisted the China delegation with their attendance and affiliated events surrounding the annual BIO International Convention, a well-known conference for biotechnology and pharma leaders.

Our Shanghai-based legal consultants also work closely with our trust and estate planning attorneys in the United States to help individuals define and achieve all of their estate planning goals. We work with Americans and foreign nationals residing in the United States and China on all aspects of wealth planning through the strategic use of wills, trusts, gifts, sales, and other income and wealth transfer devices. We also advise on corporate matters, including foreign investment, government filings and registrations, employment issues, contract review, conducting legal due diligence and other business consulting matters.

Partnering with our attorneys in the Beijing office, our Shanghai attorneys are able to provide clients with the most practical and up-to-date advice on how PRC laws and regulations affect their business.

Please note that we are a foreign law firm registered with the Ministry of Justice of the People's Republic of China. Under current Chinese regulations, we are allowed to provide information concerning the effects of the Chinese legal environment, but we are not authorized to practice Chinese law or to render legal opinions in respect of Chinese law. We work in cooperation with a number of Chinese law firms and would be happy to assist you in working with them should you require a legal opinion in respect of any Chinese law matter or other assistance from a Chinese firm.
