The fourth hearing in the Federal Trade Commission’s “Competition and Consumer Protection in the 21st Century” series — addressing innovation and intellectual property — took place Oct. 23 - 24, 2018. We offer some key takeaways. (The first hearing was held on Sept. 13. The second hearing was held on Sept. 21. The third hearing was held Oct. 15 - 17, 2018.)

Suzanne Munck of the FTC’s Office of Policy Planning opened the hearings by observing that the processes of innovation and IP policy development are complex and often involve many actors from across the private and public sectors. Noting the vital role played by IP-intensive industries in the economy and the lives of consumers, Munck explained that the hearing was designed to contribute to the FTC’s efforts to develop sound government policy promoting innovation.
