SAN FRANCISCO (April 12, 2022)—Perkins Coie congratulates Partner Patrick Thompson on his appointment by California Governor Gavin Newsom to serve as a judge on the Superior Court of California County of San Francisco.

Patrick has been a partner with the Business Litigation practice and the Antitrust & Unfair Competition Litigation practice in the San Francisco office, and he is a former chair of the office’s Diversity and Inclusion Committee. His litigation experience includes arbitrations, trials, and numerous summary judgments, and he has advised clients across the food and beverage, technology, energy, and banking and financial services industries. Patrick has also made many contributions to the legal industry and his local community, including serving as the chair of the board of the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights of the San Francisco Bay Area. He is the first San Francisco office partner to be appointed to the bench.

“Patrick is a veteran attorney who is respected for his legal acumen, upstanding character, and dedication to his local community,” said Bill Malley, Perkins Coie’s firmwide managing partner. “We truly appreciate all of the many contributions Patrick has provided to the firm and our clients and wish him every success in his new judicial appointment.”

Patrick’s experience spans more than three decades representing clients who face federal and state claims involving price-fixing and monopolization. His business litigation practice has included defending class actions involving false advertising and unfair business practice claims, as well as other complex commercial litigation.

“We’re immensely proud of Patrick and of all he has accomplished and know he will be a valued and fair addition to the court,” said Shylah Alfonso, the firmwide chair of Perkins Coie’s Antitrust & Unfair Competition Litigation practice. “Patrick is held in high regard by his colleagues and clients, and while we are sorry to see him depart, we understand that this represents a unique career opportunity.”

“On behalf of all the attorneys and business professionals in our San Francisco office, we wish Patrick our sincere congratulations on his appointment to San Francisco’s Superior Court,” said Laura Zagar, the managing partner of the firm’s San Francisco office. “Patrick’s dedication to the San Francisco community is incredibly deep, and we know he will be an excellent judge and public servant.”

Patrick holds a B.A. degree in Comparative Literature from the University of Michigan and a J.D. from Harvard Law School.
