Partners Kirk Soderquist and Jason Schneiderman were quoted in “Virtual, Augmented Reality Tech Has Arrived—But Isn't Receiving Special Regulatory Attention,” an article in Legaltech News, regarding laws and regulations pertaining to VR and AR technology.

“I don’t know if there needs to be specific regulations for AR and VR technologies,” said Perkins Coie interactive entertainment co-chair and partner Kirk Soderquist. “I feel like there’s a lot of regulations and laws that apply already around things like biometrics, and/or data collection and use and product liability [and] those sorts of things.”

Perkins Coie partner and interactive entertainment practice co-chair Jason Schneiderman said he hasn’t seen much traction in federal or state legislatures addressing VR or AR. Instead, he said, tech companies are developing industry standards regarding their emerging technology.

“More of the discussion is around setting standards in an independent body so when people are creating hardware, there’s uniform metrics and more efficiency without 20 different standards,” Jason said.
