James Zimmerman was quoted in The Globe and Mail article, "Canadian Couple Recounts ‘Survival Story’ of Their Detention in China," regarding Mr. and Mrs. Garratt's experience being detained in China.

More than 600 days after Mr. Garratt was taken away, Ms. Garratt and James met with Canadian diplomats in Beijing. “So, what’s the plan now?” James asked. “There isn’t one,” a Canadian consular-affairs co-ordinator responded. “It’s a waiting game. We keep raising the case at every opportunity and hope the trial will be soon.”
