Rebecca Engrav participated on this panel, providing a privacy update from both the United States and Canada. The United States portion of the privacy update highlighted changes relating to the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA), other state laws, the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA), as well as looking to the future of privacy laws in the United States. The presentation included a special focus on how the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) released an advance notice of proposed rulemaking (ANPRM) on “Commercial Surveillance and Data Security” on August 11, 2022. The Canadian portion examined recently enacted key changes to Quebec’s private sector privacy law, as well as provided an update on Federal Bill C-27, which proposes to overhaul private sector privacy law across Canada by replacing the existing legislation with the new Consumer Privacy Protection Act (CPPA).
