Pravin Rao was quoted in "U.S. Extends Leniency Program for Companies that Disclose Bribery," an article published by The Wall Street Journal, regarding the extension of a pilot program designed to entice companies to self-report bribery problems.

Pravin Rao said companies might be more inclined to self-disclose wrongdoing if the incentives were more concrete. The 50% discount, he said, was already available at the discretion of prosecutors before the pilot came into effect.

He suggested one possibility: Companies could potentially monitor themselves if they disclosed and cooperated under the program.

“If they can fix it on their own without someone looking over their shoulder, that would be a tremendous incentive for companies to come in,” said Mr. Rao.
