SEATTLE, WA (November 30, 2018) - Two Perkins Coie attorneys and one staff member have been awarded the firm’s inaugural J. Shan Mullin Annual Community Leadership and Service Award for demonstrating extraordinary leadership and volunteer service in their communities.

The award was established this year in honor of former partner J. Shan Mullin, who was an exceptional community builder and beloved civic leader in Seattle.

2018 Recipients:

• • John Aslin, Of Counsel in Seattle, is the force behind Team Perkins Coie’s participation in the annual Bike MS event, one of the firm’s most noteworthy community service activities. Over the past 14 years, John has built teams of up to 100 attorneys, staff members and clients to participate in the event, which raises funds to support multiple sclerosis research. With the firm’s support, he has helped raised more than half a million dollars for the cause.
  • Girmay Zahilay, Associate in Seattle, founded Rising Leaders, Inc., a nonprofit that supports low-income middle school students through leadership development, professional programming and mentorship. Girmay brought together a board of directors, raised funds, recruited dozens of mentors and students who committed to a two-year curriculum and launched the program in New York City. Just over a year later, Rising Leaders is now operating in three cities: New York, Seattle and Washington, D.C.
  • David Sebba, Applications Analyst in Seattle, is a 15-year volunteer for the Seattle Police Department’s Domestic Violence Victim Support Team (VST), which provides on-scene crisis intervention and referral services for domestic violence victims. As VST operates on weekends, the team is able to provide support to victims who need services at times when community agencies may not be available.

The recipients were honored at an awards ceremony in Seattle and each received $5,000 to donate to a nonprofit organization of their choice.
