Patner Todd Hinnen was quoted in "Spying, Encryption Fights Inch Closer To Breaking Points ," an article in Law360, regarding the terrorist attack in New York City and the expiration of Section 702 at the end of 2017.

"Everyone seems to agree that it's an important program that's needed to prevent attacks, but that doesn't mean that it can't be improved and that the intelligence community won't be open to changes that improve privacy and civil liberties without undermining the effectiveness of the programs," said Todd Hinnen, a Perkins Coie LLP partner and former acting assistant attorney general for national security at the U.S. Department of Justice.

"Innovators and the tech community and intelligence community have demonstrated an incredible appetite for innovation and the ability to solve problems with tech, and I think if people stopped arguing at those binary margins and sat down to develop solutions that provide access to law enforcement when they need it and included strong protections for data and privacy, that could make some headway," Hinnen said.
