Perkins Coie hosted a presentation and panel on the U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC) as part of the October 2014 meeting of the Silicon Valley Intellectual Property Law Association.

David S. Johanson. ITC Commissioner, and Margaret Macdonald, Director of the Office of Unfair Import Investigations (OUII), gave presentations on a variety of topics relating to the International Trade Commission, including:

  • OUII’s draft complaint review process
  • Overview of complaint filing and institution of an investigation
  • Practice tips for interacting with OUII representatives and ITC administrative law judges
  • Discussion of recent changes to ITC processes and procedures
  • Behind the scenes look at the decision making process at the Commission level after issuance of an initial determination
  • Remedy considerations and the public interest
  • Practice tips for submissions to the Commission

Panelists included Vince Lam, North America Chief Patent Litigation Counsel for HTC America, Inc., Renny Hwang, Senior Litigation Counsel at Google Inc., and John Schnurer San Diego partner and ITC practice group co-chair.

SVIPLA President Mark O'Boyle and TJ Bansal of the United States Patent and Trademark Office's Silicon Valley office were among the 45 attendees of the event.
