Panelists

Michael Butler, is chairman, CEO and a co-founder of Cascadia Capital.  Mr. Butler's focus on sustainable technology has helped propel Cascadia into some of the most important transactions in this market.  Prior to co-founding Cascadia Capital, Mr. Butler served at Lehman Brothers as a managing director responsible for global equity sales and equity syndicate. He also served on the firm's Equity Commitment Committee, Equity Syndicate Committee and Private Equity Commitment Committee. Before joining Lehman Brothers, Mr. Butler was a principal with Morgan Stanley & Co., where he was responsible for divisional global product and risk management and a member of that division's Operating Committee. He has been involved in numerous equity financing transactions for both public and private companies.  Mr. Butler holds a B.A. in political science from the University of Washington and an M.B.A. in international finance from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.

Jeff Canin is chief executive officer of MTEK Energy Solutions, which is developing an energy-efficient desalination technology, and is also a co-founder and director of Vitriosic, which intends to commercialize organic polymer-based electrochromic "smart glass" designed to reduce energy loss through residential and commercial windows. Mr. Canin has served as an entrepreneur-in-residence at the University of Washington and at Oregon State University, where he focused on startup opportunities in the cleantech and materials science sectors. He was engaged as a venture capitalist with eFund and US Venture Partners and is a limited partner in several Washington and California venture funds, and is an active angel investor.  Prior to moving to the Seattle area, Mr. Canin was senior technology analyst in San Francisco with Hambrecht & Quist, Montgomery Securities and Salomon Brothers, providing institutional research coverage of the computer hardware and software sectors. He began his career with IBM in large systems marketing and systems engineering. Mr. Canin received a B.A. in engineering and economics from Brown University and his M.B.A. from the University of California at Berkeley. He holds FINRA Series 7, 63 and 65 Securities licenses and a NYSE Series 16 Supervisory Analyst license.

Dr. Rick LeFaivre is a venture partner at OVP Venture Partners.  Dr. LeFaivre also serves as Director of New Ventures - Technology at the University of Washington's Center for Commercialization, helping to create companies that leverage technology developed at UW.  Dr. LeFaivre has over thirty years of accomplishment as a computer scientist, professor, R&D executive and investor working at elite universities, high-technology companies and venture firms. He has served as VP of the Advanced Technology Group at Apple Computer, as SVP of R&D and CTO at Borland International, and has held R&D management positions at Silicon Graphics, Sun Microsystems and Tektronix. He was a founding partner of IdeaEDGE Ventures, a San Diego-based venture development organization and the Software Patent Institute, a nonprofit corporation that advises the government on issues related to software patentability. Dr. LeFaivre started his career as a professor in the computer science department at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, teaching and carrying out research in artificial intelligence and advanced programming technology and later served as executive director of the William J. von Liebig Center for Entrepreneurism & Technology Advancement at the University of California, San Diego, focused on the effective commercialization of university-developed technology. Dr. LeFaivre has published extensively in computer science literature, served on a number of industry and academic advisory boards and has testified before the Congress of the United States on matters of technology policy.  Dr. LeFaivre received his A.B. in mathematics from the University of Missouri and his M.S. and Ph.D in computer sciences from the University of Wisconsin.  

Byron McCann is co-chairman of the Northwest Energy Angels, an angel membership organization focused on funding entrepreneurs in clean technology, and co-chair of the Cleantech Open – Pacific Northwest, a  business plan competition whose mission is to find, fund and foster the big ideas that address today’s most urgent energy, environmental and economic challenges.   Mr. McCann served as a director of the Washington Technology Industry Association for 13 years and as its vice chairman for four years.  He was previously an investment banker with Corum Group, where he concluded transactions with GT Interactive, Disney, SunGard, SPSS and Xerox.  Mr. McCann is a former chief operating officer of MediaLink, a company focused on emerging multimedia networking technologies funded by Paul Allen. He also co-founded genSoft, a database software company acquired by Computer Associates, and worked in Ernst & Young's national telecommunications consulting group. Mr. McCann has an M.B.A. from Stanford Graduate School of Business and an A.B. from Harvard.  Mr. McCann is also a venture partner with the Prism Opportunity Fund and an active angel investor.

Bradley A. Zenger is co-founder and managing director of Pivotal Investments, a venture capital firm that enables the sustainable economy through a disciplined, early stage investment approach. Prior to founding Pivotal Investments, Mr. Zenger was a sales, marketing and service executive and entrepreneur with over 20 years of experience in identifying new markets, building new businesses and driving global growth primarily in the technology markets. In 1997, he co-founded Pixelworks Inc., a fabless semiconductor company targeting the rapidly growing advanced display market. Pixelworks conducted an initial public offering in May of 2000 and is listed on the NASDAQ under the symbol PXLW. Prior to founding Pixelworks, Mr. Zenger led marketing, service and new business development teams for In Focus Systems, the market leader in the digital projection market.  Mr. Zenger has been a member of the Board of Councilors for the China-U.S. Center for Sustainable Development, where his most recent focus had been evaluating the opportunity for local biofuels and renewable energy development in China. Mr. Zenger began his career in energy and technology as a naval submarine officer supervising ship's operations including the ship’s nuclear power plant.  Mr. Zenger is currently on the board of directors of SeQuential Biofuels.  Mr. Zenger holds a BSME from the University of Notre Dame and an M.B.A. from Santa Clara University.

Kha Q. Dang is a partner at Perkins Coie and a member of Perkins Coie's Emerging Companies practice.  Mr. Dang focuses on the corporate and transactional needs of startups and high growth technology companies, including corporate formation and founders issues, angel and venture capital financing, corporate governance and mergers and acquisitions. With over a decade of legal experience working with startups and high growth companies, from the aspects of both an outside law firm and in-house general counsel at a startup, Mr. Dang serves as a key advisor on fundraising and strategic transactions and brings a hand-on, practical and business-oriented approach to legal services.  Mr. Dang's clients include companies in the cleantech, interactive entertainment, digital media, consumer e-commerce, cloud services, and life sciences sectors and the investors that invest in them.  Mr. Dang holds a J.D. from Seattle University Law School and a B.A. from the University of Washington.  Mr. Dang has been listed as a "Rising Star" by Washington Law & Politics (2006-2008, 2010).

Bruce E. Dick has been practicing business law for more than 20 years, with a focus on companies involved in energy or technology industries.   Mr. Dick's energy industry experience includes representing independent power producers and utilities with regard to their geothermal, recovered energy and other renewable energy projects in the United States and internationally.  Mr. Dick has extensive experience drafting, negotiating and closing energy project engineering, procurement and construction contracts, project development contracts, equipment supply contracts, geothermal lease and well drilling agreements, power purchase agreements, O&M agreements, project finance agreements and project purchase and sale agreements. Within the cleantech, e-commerce, medical device, software and technology industries, Mr. Dick has represented clients in intellectual property acquisition, development, distribution, e-commerce and license agreements, strategic alliances and emerging company formation and legal issues.  Mr. Dick holds a J.D., an M.B.A. and a B.A. from the University of Washington.  Mr. Dick has been listed as a Washington Super Lawyer (2007-2010) and listed in The Best Lawyers in America (2010-2011).
