Overview

Perkins Coie has one of the oldest and most respected political law practices in the country. In addition to performing regulatory and counseling work, we have an active litigation practice that touches upon virtually every aspect of the political process.

Our voting rights litigation practice is distinct among law firms. Perkins Coie regularly represent individuals and organizations seeking to eliminate obstacles to voter registration and participation. We also have significant experience in conducting recounts; representing candidates, campaigns and other interested individuals and entities in disputes arising out of the elections process; and managing campaign finance litigation.

Areas of Representation

  • Voting rights
  • Redistricting
  • Recounts
  • Campaign finance
  • Election process and procedure

Election law is rooted in the U.S. Constitution and these cases are often litigated on accelerated timetables against a backdrop of complex and ever-changing Supreme Court jurisprudence. Perkins Coie has a unique understanding of this area of the law and adds a perspective made possible only through experience—we look beyond the “tried and true” to consider how litigation strategies and precedents fit into the greater whole of our representative democracy.

Perkins Coie is on the front line of these issues and our litigation team has achieved several notable victories recently in federal and state courts in Arizona, Florida, Georgia, Florida, Mississippi, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Texas, Virginia, and Wisconsin.
