The pandemic has exacerbated issues of food insecurity across the country, with millions of Americans struggling to regularly afford food for their households. The pandemic’s economic consequences have particularly affected seniors, who lost jobs at higher rates than younger peers. Not only do seniors face the heightened health risks posed by coronavirus, older Americans often rely upon fixed incomes which may lead to difficult tradeoffs amid increased food prices. Unfortunately, seniors also face challenges in participating in the nation’s food stamp program. AARP Foundation’s recent report Older Adult SNAP Access explores these issues and provides policy recommendations to fight food insecurity for seniors.
