Overview

Peter Hegel counsels clients on protection of personally identifiable information (PII) and infrastructure, as well as other issues arising under domestic data security and privacy laws and regulations, including the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) and the California Privacy Rights Act (CPRA). Peter has completed several successful secondments, including with a major social networking company, a major online retailer, and a multinational online search engine platform. As such, Peter has extensive experience working closely with in-house legal and compliance departments in delivering pragmatic and timely advice to cross-functional groups across the business.

A Certified Information Privacy Professional (CIPP/US), Peter advises clients on incident response issues, including identification of gaps in security, addressing compliance obligations, coordinating with forensic investigators, and notifying consumers affected by breach incidents.

Peter has experience advising clients on industry-specific standards for compliance with relevant laws, including the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCIDSS). He also counseled clients on international data privacy matters, including the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).

While attending the University of Chicago Law School, Peter served as a judicial extern in the Chancery Division of the Circuit Court of Cook County and interned in the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Illinois.

As part of his pro bono practice, Peter works on immigration matters and affirmative asylum cases.
