Overview

Matthew Moffa, named one of the "Most Active and Best Performing Patent Litigators of 2022" by Patexia, is a trial litigator and registered patent lawyer. His broad intellectual property practice includes trying patent infringement claims in federal court and before the International Trade Commission (ITC), contesting and defending patent validity before the U.S. Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB), and advising technology clients on patent prosecution, acquisition, and licensing. He has a track record of securing early wins and walkaway dismissals for his clients. He has been selected for inclusion in “Best Lawyers: Ones to Watch” from 2021 to 2023.

Matt represents diverse clients in the United States, Europe, and Asia in the telecommunications, computer sciences, energy, automotive, life sciences, and financial industries. His clients include public companies, mid-size businesses, and startup technology innovators. Matt has brought declaratory judgment actions against aggressive patent owners and has led national campaigns against patent infringers. He has won case-dispositive claim constructions and patent invalidations that were upheld by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit and has secured valuable litigation stays and settlements from his opponents. He has deposed and defended high-value corporate and expert witnesses and protected his clients from expansive discovery.

Matt is a member of the New York Intellectual Property Law Association and the Hon. William C. Conner Inn of Court. In recognition of his active pro bono practice in immigration law, he received Perkins Coie’s 2018 Pro Bono Leadership Award; he is a two-time past recipient of the Legal Aid Society Pro Bono Publico Award. While a student at New York University School of Law, Matt was an extern in the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of New York and an executive editor of the NYU Journal of Law & Business. Prior to practicing law, he was a lab manager at an internationally acclaimed university medical center.
