Overview

Jennifer Understahl negotiates, strategizes, and collaborates with clients to close sophisticated commercial real estate transactions across the United States and internationally. She focuses on helping large corporations navigate their owned and leased real estate portfolios, commercial leasing (on both the landlord and tenant side), real estate finance, including new loans and workouts of existing loans; improved commercial property sales and acquisitions; and joint ventures.

Jennifer is experienced in a wide range of asset types, with an emphasis on large, industrial buildings and centers (build to suits and customized fit-outs), retail (including malls, shopping centers, and pads), senior housing facilities, offices (campuses, buildings, and tenant spaces), research and testing facilities, and mixed-use projects. She works closely with emerging companies and institutional corporate clients to help them strategize regarding complex deals and also assists with day-to-day advice regarding their real estate and leasing issues. As the lead outside real estate counsel for several tech clients, she guides them in expanding their office, headquarters, and research and development footprint domestically and internationally. In addition, she has helped several online retail companies navigate their evolving real estate needs as they trend from ecommerce to brick-and-mortar sales. Jennifer also has significant depth in all aspects of commercial real estate loan workouts and represents some of the country’s largest commercial mortgage backed securities (CMBS) special servicers in handling their specially serviced loans.

Jennifer is actively involved in the Perkins Coie’s CMBS and Retail & Consumer Products industry groups. She also co-chairs the firmwide Women’s Forum, is a member of the firm’s Partner Compensation Committee, and is actively involved in the Phoenix office’s diversity and hiring committees. Jennifer belongs to multiple national and local industry groups, including the Urban Land Institute and Innovating Commerce Serving Communities (ICSC), and serves on the Trends Day board of the Urban Land Institute (ULI) Arizona.
