Overview

Daniel Marre's practice focuses on real estate transactions and development, with an emphasis on the hotel industry. He has significant experience with transactions affecting commercial property, including acquisitions, dispositions, construction, development, financing, and leasing.

Within the hotel industry, Daniel has been involved in a number of high-profile hotel transactions, including the acquisition and financing of the Essex House Hotel on Central Park South in New York City, the acquisition of a joint-venture interest in The Hotel del Coronado and refinancing of the hotel, and the acquisition and financing of The Raleigh Hotel in Miami Beach, an art deco icon. His hotel clients range from small boutiques to some of the world’s largest hotels and management companies. Daniel guides them through the complexities of hotel projects and the distinct legal challenges of owning and operating a hotel.

Known for his representation of clients in complex development projects and high-value real estate transactions, Daniel worked closely with the Macy’s real estate team on a number of issues including, most significantly, the vertical subdivision of Macy’s flagship store on State Street in Chicago, and the sale of a portion of the building for renovation and conversion to office space. This work necessitated long negotiations on new covenants, conditions, and restrictions to govern the operations both of Macy’s retail store and, above the retail store, newly renovated office space. He also has represented DRW Holdings Group in the development of a mixed-use residential and hotel complex, as well as the sale of the hotel to an affiliate of Loews Hotels & Resorts. His work on the 42-story Optima Chicago Center has been surpassed only by his work on the 57-story Optima Signature tower in establishing a new standard of residential leasing in the heart of downtown Chicago.

With client relationships spanning more than a decade, including long-term counsel to such companies as Integrated Capital, Optima, Geller Capital Partners, and the Spertus Institute for Jewish Learning and Leadership, Daniel uses his understanding of clients’ competitive and market pressures to serve in a valued advisory role when needed.

In addition to being an avid musician, Daniel is active within the Chicago arts community and is a longtime regular at Chicago’s Old Town School of Folk Music. Daniel is also a member of the board for Lawyers for the Creative Arts (LCA), an organization that provides free legal service to financially eligible clients in the arts, and serves as an elected community representative on the Local School Council for his neighborhood Chicago Public High School.
