Overview

A physicist by training, Partner Bing Ai has more than 25 years of experience in patent procurement, patent strategies, and patent portfolio management in a wide range of technologies, including 3G, LTE/4G, and 5G wireless standard essential patents, and other technical standards. He represents clients in patent disputes, and conducts freedom to operate analyses, patent validity analyses, and infringement analyses. Bing also counsels and assists clients in patent litigation at district courts and the International Trade Commission (ITC).

Bing has an active practice in patent post-grant trials before the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB) of the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, including inter partes review (IPR) and post-grant review (PGR). He is the named lead or backup counsel in over 130 PTAB trial proceedings. Bing performs patent due diligence for patent licenses, patent portfolio sales, corporate financing, investments, and mergers and acquisitions. His extensive experience includes patent reexamination, reissue, and other post-issuance proceedings.

As an advisor to technology companies, Bing works with companies ranging from multinational corporations to midsized companies and startups; he also represents universities and research institutes.

Bing was named 2021 Lawyer of the Year in Patent Law by Best Lawyers in America and has been listed in their Patent Law rankings from 2016 to 2022. IAM Patent 1000: The World’s Leading Patent Professionals has included Bing since 2015. 

Bing is a contributing author to the patent litigation book Anatomy of a Patent Case (Third Edition) published by the American College of Trial Lawyers (ACTL). He is on the steering committee of the U.S. division of the International Association for the Protection of Intellectual Property (AIPPI) under the American Intellectual Property Law Association (AIPLA) and is the China subcommittee chair of the AIPPI U.S. group. Bing is a frequent speaker at seminars and lectures on U.S. and international patent issues.

Prior to attending law school, Bing conducted research and development work in laser physics, nonlinear optics, and atomic spectroscopy. He published research articles in various scientific journals such as Nature, Optics Letters, Applied Physics Letters and Journal of the Optical Society of America.
