Amy Simpson helps clients understand, manage and improve the strength of their multimillion-dollar intellectual property investments. Using her extensive patent litigation background, Amy assists clients in assessing the competitive landscape and building patent portfolios into a strategic asset for companies to leverage to accomplish crucial business goals. She also helps companies identify, grow and acquire key patent assets used to execute legal strategies.
Representative of Amy’s patent portfolio analysis is her work with a large multimedia company looking to use its patent portfolio to drive technology licenses. Following her mapping and identification of the strengths and gaps in her client’s patent portfolio, vis-à-vis its competition, Amy structured an initial enforcement plan that ultimately led to significant patent license agreements with industry competitors. She also advises FORTUNE 100 and other tech clients on strategic patent acquisitions to shield them from threats by rivals and new entrants. As a result of her strategic IP counseling, Amy was recognized by IAM Strategy 300 as one of The World’s Leading IP Strategists (2017).
Amy is also skilled in both offensive and defensive challenges to patent validity, and has been representing clients in inter partes reviews (IPRs) before the United States Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB) since their introduction in 2012. She is lead counsel on more than 25 IPRs, with technologies ranging from conditional access schemes and database software to virtual reality and collision avoidance technologies. Her depth of experience in IPR procedures includes her annual sharing of original research as editor-in-chief of the firm’s annual report on IPR developments since 2015.
In her leadership of Perkins Coie, Amy serves as the Firmwide Patent Litigation Group Chair and Firmwide Co-Chair Post-Grant Practice. She is also a member of the firm’s Compensation Committee.
