The Intersection of Religious Discrimination and Political Speech: Emerging Challenges for Employers in the 2016 Workplace
This year’s presidential election airwaves are filled with strong speech about immigration, same-sex marriage and prevention of terrorist attacks, which creates new challenges for employers.
Today’s political climate makes it particularly critical for employers to understand the obligations that Title VII imposes for avoiding discrimination and harassment based on religion, as well as for accommodating religious practices in the workplace. Employers also should understand the legal protections for political party affiliation, including when, where and to what degree those laws apply.
Join us for a continuing education session devoted exclusively to demystifying the crossroads of political and religious issues. We will help correct misinformation and provide you with practical guidance for promoting legal compliance, without sacrificing diversity of thought and expression at work.
Perkins Coie attorneys will outline the myriad ways in which speech may be protected in the workplace and contrast them with the requirements for accommodating religious beliefs and preventing religious discrimination. At the session’s conclusion, you will have the knowledge you need to advise your organization on this emerging workplace issue.
