SAN FRANCISCO (April 30, 2019) – Following the launch of the Perkins Coie TechVenture Index™ in March, the firm is pleased to share the first quarter data and analyses for 2019.

The overall value of the Perkins Coie TechVenture Index™ is 325.75 points. It dropped 13% from Q4 2018. The index can be viewed here.

“The goal of the Perkins Coie TechVenture Index™ is to show a holistic view of the entire ecosystem and, as we can see from our first quarterly update, it is expressing just that. We’re seeing fewer, but larger, investments. There was some Q1 growth in the life sciences sector, but overall there were fewer deals,” said Michael Glaser, co-chair of Perkins Coie’s Corporate practice.

“Despite the excitement in the market surrounding eagerly-anticipated IPOs, the exit market has been sluggish since the last quarter of 2018,” said Buddy Arnheim, co-chair of the Emerging Companies & Venture Capital practice. “We can attribute the ongoing slowness in mergers and acquisitions to a number of factors, including investors’ willingness to wait and see how IPOs perform before making exit decisions about other portfolio companies.”

The Perkins Coie TechVenture Index™ is updated quarterly and provides historical data beginning with Q1 2002 using an algorithm comprised of several inputs, including funds, financings and exits. The index was developed in collaboration with Dr. Michael Ewens, associate professor of Finance and Entrepreneurship at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech).
