Perkins Coie was featured in The American Lawyer article “17 Pro Bono Matters That Big Law Championed*,” regarding it’s representation of Tamara Loertscher and the successful challenge of the Wisconsin law known as the "cocaine mom" law that allowed a pregnant woman found to have taken illegal drugs to be jailed.

Perkins Coie lawyers successfully challenged a Wisconsin law known as the "cocaine mom" law that allowed a pregnant woman found to have taken illegal drugs to be jailed, with a guardian ad litem appointed for the fetus. While seeking medical care, Perkins Coie's client, Tamara Loertscher, admitted to past use of marijuana and methamphetamine, although she said she'd stopped using the drugs when she suspected she was pregnant. She was jailed for 18 days for refusing court-ordered inpatient drug treatment. Perkins Coie represented Loertscher in a suit against Taylor County, Wisconsin, that led a U.S. district judge to void the law in May 2017.
