Perkins Coie Expands Its National Intellectual Property and Life Sciences Practices
WASHINGTON, D.C. (July 20, 2009) – Perkins Coie announced today that seven attorneys and one scientific advisor have joined the firm. The group, comprised of senior patent litigators and patent prosecutors with a focus in the life sciences industry, adds significant depth to the firm's nationally recognized intellectual property practice.
"This is a talented group of attorneys that we are delighted to have join the firm," said Perkins Coie Managing Partner Bob Giles. "We are committed to expanding our intellectual property capabilities, and this group of highly respected lawyers will help our pursuit of that strategic goal."
New partner Colin Sandercock added, "We look forward to joining Perkins Coie's intellectual property and life sciences industry practices. We have a long and successful history of working with many of Perkins Coie's patent litigators and are excited to be reuniting with them as a part of the Perkins team."
The addition of these attorneys from Proskauer Rose complements Perkins Coie's efforts to expand its national intellectual property practice through strategic acquisitions and lateral hires. In 2008 for example, the firm added 13 former Heller Ehrman attorneys, mainly comprised of patent litigators, and in 2007, the firm added several attorneys from Mayer Brown to its IP litigation team, including Michael Warnecke, the former head of Mayer Brown's worldwide IP practice. In 2004, Perkins Coie merged with Phoenix-based Brown & Bain, a firm known nationally for its IP litigation capabilities.
"I have known and worked with Colin and John for many years and am pleased to be have them as part of the firm" said Mike Warnecke, co-chair of Perkins' Patent Litigation practice.
"Adding this team of attorneys to our firm brings even greater depth to the services we can provide our clients," said Chun Ng, chair of the firm's intellectual property practice. Jim Lisbakken, chair of the firm's life sciences industry practice added, "Our new colleagues will greatly enhance the capabilities that we can offer life sciences clients."
Colin Sandercock, focusing on patent litigation, licensing and counseling, joins Perkins Coie's intellectual property practice as a partner. Paul Booth, Ph.D, John Isacson and David Laub also join the intellectual property practice as partners. Dr. Booth's practice focuses on strategic patent portfolio development and counseling, Mr. Isacson's practice focuses on counseling, patent procurement, interferences and Hatch-Waxman issues, and Mr. Laub's practice focuses on patent procurement, patent litigation and counseling.
In addition, intellectual property associates Steven Allis, David Baltazar and Joseph Ricigliano join Perkins Coie, along with scientific advisor Afzal Chowdhury, Ph.D. Additional attorneys are expected to join this group in the coming weeks.
They join an intellectual property practice that includes nearly 200 lawyers focused on IP litigation, patent and trademark prosecution, technology licensing, copyrights, and trade secret and unfair competition counseling. The life sciences practice includes more than 50 attorneys who represent clients across a full range of life sciences areas, including biologics, diagnostics, medical devices and pharmaceuticals.
