    Perkins Coie Partner Dax Hansen was quoted in an article in CoinDesk titled, "Bitcoin Faces Regulatory Push in Senate Banking Committee Hearing."  The article discussed a recent Senate hearing about virtual currencies and the response to what was covered in the hearing. Most of the discussion in the hearing focused on the risks around bitcoin and how to best regulate it to mitigate those risks. But a lot of the reddit feedback centered on the need to let it breathe. There’s just one problem, said Dax, "It’s not a very rational discussion right now."

    Perkins Coie Partner Dax Hansen was quoted this week in an article published by Internet Retailer, "Changing Their Stripes." The article discusses initiatives recently launched by Visa and MasterCard Worldwide in response to an increase in e-commerce and the rise of online competitors like PayPal and Facebook Credits. One example is MasterCard's Open APIs, which according to the article "is designed to make it easier for mobile and web developers to integrate MasterCard payments into their applications." The author quoted Hansen as saying this "appears aimed at developers looking for ways to sell games, music and other digital content to mobile consumers." "Developers are looking for flexible, easy solutions that don't require customers to input their card numbers," Hansen says.

    Dax Hansen Comments on Laws Governing Virtual Currency

    Virtual currency has real value and companies that operate online games are rushing to cash-in on the virtual economy. Dax Hansen, a partner in Perkins Coie's Electronic Financial Services practice commented, in a recent Information Week article, that "points," "coins," "bucks," and other forms of virtual currency are becoming commonplace online. But new laws like the Credit Card Act of 2009 and existing state gift laws create hurdles for some virtual currency programs.  Under the new Act and proposed rules, federal laws will impose restrictions on expiring certain types of virtual currency in addition to traditional gift certificates.
