Ted Chung to Team with Patrick Collins at Perkins Coie

Press Release

CHICAGO (March 15, 2007) – Perkins Coie is very pleased to announce that Theodore ("Ted") T. Chung has joined its national Litigation practice as a partner. Chung, who was most recently first assistant corporation counsel in the City of Chicago's Law Department, will work in Perkins Coie's Chicago office, and will practice closely with Patrick M. Collins, who plans to join Perkins Coie from the U.S. Attorney's Office in early April.

"Ted is an outstanding trial lawyer and investigator who will be a tremendous asset to our litigation practice and our internal corporate investigations practice," said Chris Wilson, managing partner of Perkins Coie's Chicago office. "Patrick and Ted provide us with a team of experienced former prosecutors who are instantly recognized for their trial skills, dedication and integrity. We are thrilled to have them join us."

As an Assistant U.S. Attorney in Chicago from 1998 to 2004, Chung handled numerous high profile cases and, together with Collins, prosecuted several "license-for-bribe" cases as part of Operation Safe Road. While with the U.S. Attorney's Office, Chung was promoted to Deputy Chief of the General Crimes Section by U.S. Attorney Patrick Fitzgerald and received several awards, including an Outstanding Service Award from the Federal Bureau of Investigation, a Commendation for Outstanding Prosecutive Support from the U.S. Department of Transportation, and two Performance Awards from the U.S. Department of Justice.

In March 2004, Chung was appointed Mayor Richard M. Daley's Deputy Chief of Staff for Public Safety. On the Mayor's staff, Chung focused primarily on supporting the efforts of the Chicago Police Department to reduce the city's murder rate. In March 2005, Chung was named the First Assistant Corporation Counsel, second-in-command of the city's 290-attorney Law Department. In this capacity, Chung counseled high ranking city officials and represented the city in connection with significant legal matters.

"Ted's experience as a federal prosecutor, a corporation counsel, and an attorney in one of Chicago's largest firms adds tremendous depth to our practice," said Tom Boeder, head of Perkins Coie's national Litigation practice. "Ted has a wide range of experience representing sophisticated organizations and will be a great resource for our clients."

"Ted and Patrick are a dynamic addition to our team of trial lawyers and former prosecutors," said David Taylor, firmwide co-chair of the Investigations & White Collar Defense Practice. "We are delighted that they have chosen to build their private practices with us."

Chung and Collins will join a deep bench of litigation experience at Perkins Coie nationally that includes many former federal and state prosecutors and other former government officials. Together, this group represents businesses and individuals in the defense of white collar criminal matters and other government enforcement actions, in internal investigations and corporate compliance matters, and in complex litigation.

"I look forward to contributing to Perkins Coie's Litigation practice and to building an internal corporate investigations practice in the Chicago office with Patrick Collins, my friend and former colleague," said Chung. "I am confident that, at Perkins Coie, Patrick and I will again combine to form a formidable legal team."

Chung is the fifth attorney to join Perkins Coie's Chicago office as a partner within the past five weeks. "The firm is committed to continuing to expand the Chicago office with lawyers of the quality of our new partners," said Wilson. "This is a terrific and exciting time for us and our clients, and we are thrilled to welcome so many highly qualified individuals to our team."

Chung earned his law degree, cum laude, from Northwestern University School of Law, where he was named to the Order of the Coif and served as the Editor in Chief of the school's Law Review. He earned his undergraduate degree, cum laude, in English from Dartmouth College. Following law school, Chung clerked for Federal Court of Appeals Judge Ralph B. Guy, Jr. in Ann Arbor, Michigan, and then worked in the Litigation Department of Sidley & Austin before accepting a position in the U.S. Attorney's Office.
