Perkins Coie Lawyers Present Webinar on Virtual Currency in Online Games

General News
07.08.2010

One of the most ubiquitous aspects of online games today is the use of virtual currency and electronic wallet systems. In the past, many subscription-based massively multiplayer online games handled virtual currency as an earned event through rigorous game play. Today, with the rapid adoption of micro-transaction-based business models in the free-to-play MMO and social gaming categories, virtual currencies purchased with real-world currency has become the prevailing model and primary revenue driver for many game companies. As a result, it has become increasingly important for publishers and developers to understand the regulatory framework that govern these cash-backed stored value systems to effectively grow and manage their online businesses.

As a service to its partners, clients and friends, Perkins Coie client Live Gamer invited lawyers Dax Hansen, Kirk Soderquist and Ron Koo to present a webinar last month on the legal issues impacting electronic stored value systems and related IP-ownership matters.
