Guy Martin Contributes to ABA Journal on Recent Supreme Court Indian Trust Ruling

The recent U.S. Supreme Court decision in the case Carcieri v. Salazar held that the 1934 Indian Reorganization Act applied only to tribes recognized by the federal government at the time the law was enacted, thus limiting the authority of the federal government to transfer land in trust for the benefit of Indian tribes. The case revolved around 31 acres of Rhode Island land which the Narragansett IndianTribe wanted to put into a federal trust. Perkins Coie Partner Guy Martin contributed to a recent ABA Journal article on the decision saying that it could affect "dozens and dozens" of tribes that were not recognized in the 1934 act.
